Re: Ask the pickup winders ?

For me getting another pickup is a crap-shoot. Some I like certain sound characteristic's, but there is always something missing. Always a compromise.

If I'm looking to get something out of an Axe, Thur a pickup all I can do is install a different one, and take a chance. I think the ultimate thing would be for me, a modification/improvement of an existing one.

Is it possible to say for example, I have one in a guitar and I love the highs and lows but just want the pickup to be modified to put out more midrange. Or a different on to put out more lows.

Is it possible and cost effective to modify an existing pickup in only one of it's harmonic range's without changing the others and then return it to a customer?

    Just a thought, any takers.

Are you talking about a rewind and rebuild Cudamax? Yes you can do that and many of us winders offer rewind services and for the cost to do that is really a great option. You can seriously save some money that way and get a new pickup sound.

Here's what I normally charge for rewinds.

Single coil rewinds starting at $45 per pickup and humbucker rewinds starting at $65 per pickup.

What I'm asking is this, For instance at the Dimazio site the super Distortion is rated on there own Tone Guide as this
    Treble-----5.5
    Mids-------7.5
    Bass------8.0

Can you take a Dimarzio DP 100 Super Distortion Pickup
    and just Boost the
    Mids to a 8.5 or a 9.0
    Bass to a -------8.5
    keep the Treble at--5.5

Now right about now your saying this guy really is thecrazygreek and I could achieve this shit with my amp settings, but I don't think so. It all starts from the pickup in my opinion and my amp's settings would have to go up-to 12 or 14 to just boost the mids to what I'm looking for.

I don't know what makes a pickup have more treble or mids or bass and your saying a Rewind, I don't know, will that give me a Special Dimarzio DP 100 Super Distortion with Boosted mids and a slight increase in the bass with leaving the treble where it's at.

Or should I just look at the Duncan pickup booster stomp box or some kinda on-board emg Product boost for this on the guitar I'm looking to do this with that has the Dimarzio in it that I want to slightly modify to my taste in sound?

Re: Ask the pickup winders ?

Here's a question about Single coils.

I have an '06 Standard Strat that came with Tex-Mex pups, now the Middle pup is RW/RP*, the 2&4 pos on the switch are lower in volume and seem a little muted. I have recently changed to some GFS '60s Repro's and the middle pup is (they say, I have no way of telling) just RW and the 2&4 pos. have no volume drop and are bright and clear.

Ok, My question is the RP of the Tex-Mex causing the muting and low vol. or is there something else?

I have noticed that other winders have RW/RP middles so Im guessing that there is something Im missing.

How about a beginners explanation of how pickups work and what makes them sound the way they do, ie, bright, dark, loud, quiet, etc.
