On the custom theaters I sell we have the drywallers install sound absorbing drywall,
about $30 for a 4x8 sheet. Also you could use regular drywall, stager your studs and install another layer. In my opinion, unless you are recording or have a horrible standing wave pattern the packages you see in Sweetwater are overpriced and not effective for sound proofing. |

Really, wow. Surprise. surprise, surprise. I'm an old fu---- at 45 compared to you. You seem wise in your conversation's and older, But don't try and grow-up too fast. One thing I'd like to know, got laid yet. You know between all us older guys here if your trying to hook-up, we all can give-ya some real good moves and pointers that will make sure that can happen real fast. So if their is a cute little hottie around you have been look-in at, you can always call on me "Uncle Dodmanthing" for some for sure thing pointers

Hey Mash... how about a potentially, practically free solution?
Carpet. You can go to your local carpet store and get remnants and pieces... some will even give it away (or throw it away). All you need is a staple gun and a razor knife. You can patchwork the walls in carpet. It is easily cleaned, will kill the sound quite effectively, and can be done for practically nothing. It does work... it is what the storage place we used for rehearsals did to kill the sound between units. It isn't sound proof, but it sure is sound absorbant....

Re: sound-proofing
Well Baxter, see, life is about choices..... He actually asked for cheap ways to reduce sound. Carpet remnants accomplishes that, is easily maintained, and can be trimmed to accomodate existing or future decor items. Further, it has been used in practice rooms all over Nashville to accomplish this very thing. When you want to do things, but don't have the funds, it's all about creativity. So you have to ask yourself... what is more important? Seems as if you're saying the answer is "pretty walls and posters". /shrug uh... ok.
Cool, Mash. Good luck, sir! I'd love to hear what your solution ends up being ![]() You never know when some one else may need that same info.....

Re: sound-proofing
Thanks Chan! I might just take some black carpet and cover the inside of my door and the area around it. Do you think that would help? I'm just trying to help out some of my family because my mom works at home and is on the phone a lot. She would like it if it wasn't so loud.

EDIT**I just had a thought... you could use an attentuator to do the same thing... would Mom spring for one? Attenuators I have heard the Hot Plates are nice. There are likely others here who would be a better resource than I, though.

Re: sound-proofing
The GN'R logo would be sweet but doing it with spare pieces of carpet would probably not turn out like I think it would then I would get pissed off...

Re: sound-proofing
About a million years ago when I lived with the folks, I hung blankets from the walls, and an extra set of blackout curtains over the windows and another set of curtains over the door.
Good luck. ![]() |

Re: sound-proofing
how about a fractional tube amp then you won't have to carpet or walls or cover them with egg cartons (old time trick) and hell who knows you might be able to hear something when your in your twenties. I had a hearing test a few months back and the people in the room around me were reacting to what was in headphones on my head faster than I was. My wife was about ten feet away and could hear more than I could.
Trust me I now know you should not crank an amp and stand next to it like just my little sister said every day "you'll be sorry" who knew the little shit was right. |

Re: sound-proofing
Ok, surfer. What about blaring headphones? I have a bad habit of doing that...

I wasn't gonna go there... but the egg carton trick makes one of the best rooms, acoutically speaking. I figured if we were gonna balk on carpet, egg cartons were right out ![]() ...and how lucky did I think I was to score that front row spot at the VH concert... in front of the right hand speaker columns.... I'm sorry... what'd ya say?

Re: sound-proofing
I have used egg cartons...in my youth...they just scatter the sound a bit and lower the leakage minumally...but none the less I did use them
(hopefully not a stupid question) can you move out to the garage? also, attenuator for your amp and really (not to be an old fussy person) you should not be mixing or listening to music too loud for too long....so, attenuator for your amp...and keep the volume down if you have the drummer problem then garage?

trust me I have done the same thing and it is NOT GOOD....of course when I was young I did not ever think about being 30+ but, I love music and would like to be able to hear it for the rest of my life...and I have lost a chunk of hearing...(my ears used to be the best out of all my friends I could hear stuff so faint....I also heard stuff no one else did but, that is another story.....I wish I would of taken a little better care of my hearing) The one thing I have noticed with the ear buds that people use with their IPODS is they have the harshest mid range.... also music being recorded now days is louder and more compressed...those elements together are dangerous....plus ear phones by themselves are dangerous.... humbly, I would ask you (or anyone) to just turn it down a bit...become aware and keep the vol a bit lower...that is what I do now
