Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
Me.
All the years I've been playing, I always fancied myself a riff man. Sort of a compliment to the bass.... Everybody I've ever played with immediately wants to start playing all the leads. They sure look at me funny when I just take the rhythm parts and start groovin'. They ask me "Can you play that?" I tell 'em "Yeah, but you go right ahead. I'll do the rhythm stuff." I always get the same incredulous "Really?" Then they fxck the lead up while I keep the jam going..... Okay, enough about me! Paul Stanley of Kiss Malcomb Young of AC/DC There's more I'll think of later.... Izzy of GnR seemed to hold his own with Slash |

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
I'd definitely agree on Hetfield a great rhythm player that really holds down his part. If your talking a player that does great rhythm work as well as some lead stuff. Then I go down a different and weird path but I think Prince is amazing. he does some leads and some strange experimental stuff but he also has great timing and is a sold rhythm player that adds amazing depth to some crazy talented songs

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
As rhythm guitarist in the strictest sense of the word, Scott Ian immediately comes to mind.
In a broader sense John Sykes, Jake E Lee, Gary Moore, Murray/Smith and Rory Gallagher are definitely worth a mention. And let's not forget Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi and Jimmy Page!

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
Maybe I misunderstood the spirit and intent of the thread.
The rhythm guitarist, as I see it, is the second guitar player. Often overlooked, always under rated. The first is the lead guitar, if he's the only one there is no rhythm guitar player, eh? Hetfield, yeah. He had that squirrely looking Hammet playing leads while he did vocals. Page? SRV? Blackmore? Iommi? Calling them rhythm guitarists is like saying they were electric guitarists. Yeah, it's an element of what they do but they were THE guitar player in their bands. They were the EVERYTHING guitarists. Prince was what I would call the show-off guitar I guess. He always had a guitar player onstage with him, paid to play what Prince told him to. Prince would do his part to put on a show, and plays very well, but not every song. |

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
Gotta agree with Neo on the rhythm/lead guitarist thing. I think those that are "the guitar player" don't qualify.
Among my favorites, perhaps you might want to listen to Evanescence and Avenged Sevenfold, if you haven't. Some of the tightest rhythm work I have heard in a while.

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
(Heavy sigh...)
If Darrell Abott played rhythm, who played lead? :-) If you're a Kiss fan, he wrote 95% of those riffs and played them well. Forget the stage show and the make up. The guy rocks. Good vocals too. If you're not a Kiss fan, nevermind. Don Felder of the Eagles is a favorite of mine. He played alot of leads, but shared duties with Frey, Leadon, and Walsh. Glen Frey is supposed to be an Uber-Guitarist, knows every chord in the book. I dunno. He certainly doesn't show off. |

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
Neo yor definition of the rythym player and mine are different, you say they are the second guitar player, but what if you are the ONLY guitar player? that makes them the rythym player in my book!

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
Doesn't every guitarist (with the exception of Yngwie) spend 90% of his time playing rhythm?

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
I must be the thick one here.
A band has two guitarists. On their albums, they list the band member names and instruments they play. Vocals, drums, keyboards, bass, rhythm guitar, lead guitar. THEY make that distinction themselves, and then YOU go see them play live. You tell me. A good example; When Sammy Hagar first hooked up with Van Halen in the eighties, Eddie shared a stage with another guitar player for the first time in his career. The sound was fuller, much improved, and I can assure you Eddie was NOT the rhythm player. |

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
Iron Maiden has two guitarists.
Both play leads. Both play rhythm for the better part of the gig. I don't consider Janick Gers a guitarist, before someone asks. Judas Priest has two guitarists. Both play leads. Both play rhythm for the better part of the gig. A rhythm guitarist is usually the guy who doesn't get to play leads. Of course, there are exceptions. Like Rudolph Schenker. A lead guitarist is the guy who gets to hog the spotlight. But inbetween leads, he plays rhythm. And can be damn good at it. John Sykes comes to mind. He's a far more inspiring rhythm guitarist than most dedicated rhythm guitarists...

Re: Favorite Ryhtm Guitarist
So there you have it, Malcom Young is the greatest Rhythm Guitarist ever cuz thats all he does. To my knowledge he has never played a lead (but I could be wrong) a strictly rhythm kind of guy!
