Thumbs up Hendrix "Voodoo Chile" at Woodstock

I never get sick of this tune, I wish the whole thing was on youtube. I have tons of Hendrix bootlegs, heard so many versions of this song, but this was is special, its the most inspired

Awesome video. I like Hendrix alot. I wonder how often he was, well "under the influence", when he was on stage? He is amazing and I always wondered how he could play so great if he was wrecked all the time.

I've thought about that alot. You hear lots of stories, and I think most are massively exaggerated if not complete BS. However at Woodstock, during this set I do believe he was on something, even if only pot, I have the DVD (and had the VHS) his eyes look red and glazed and he has a jovial attitude on stage. Ive read seperate accounts of Hendrix at woodstock. Neil Young tells a story (damn I forget most of it now, Ill have to look it up) that he and Hendrix were hanging out at the festival a day or 2 prior to Jimis set, and they were on mescaline, for some reason hot wired and drove around in a pickup truck they found. At one point Neil was driving and Jimi climbed out onto the hood and was riding around on there. Young was saying that was his greatest memory of Woodstock.

Somewhere else I read that Jimi had taken some of the infamous bad acid and spent the day before his set at the first aid/recovery area (i forget what they call it, but its in the Woodstock movie, Wavy Gravy was incharge )

I think he was stoned on weed alot, probably some speed in the early days, and maybe coke in the later days. I'm only familiar with one show, the Monterey Pop Festival, where many people say they saw him taking acid all day long and even took some as he was walking out to the stage to play. When you watch that footage or hear the set, it sounds like he was pretty crazy. Suprisingly good in some ways, but loose and messy in others. A couple of my favorite performances from him were at that show, and several of the songs are terrible

listen to him trying to talk in the beginning of these songs

Voodoo Chile definitely never gets old, Josh Charles plays an amazing version of it on the piano, you can see watch him play the song here: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPDZbBEMq5c]YouTube - Josh Charles - Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" Live at City Winery Nov 10, 2010[/ame]
