That's crazy. Those picture of the smoke, did you take them?
yeah thats from the roof of my building, I took those right after I saw come cop cars get torched on the news, I assumed thats what the smoke was from, but I learned later there were several other fires in the area at that time. One news source is reporting that one person is dead, but there arent any other details about that.

this is an aerial shot of the downtown area (albeit a 30 year old picture haha) That white dome is the football stadium, nowadays, right behind it is the hockey arena, thats where the craziness started, and moved left and down towards the main bridge (Granville street) My apartment is just out of view in the lower right hand corner

I was wondering how bad the smoke was over in your neighborhood. It was a lot harder to see over here in the NE corner of the city.
The followups should be interesting. In this day of cell phone cameras and social media, it was amazing watching all those idiots proudly doing damage while their friends filmed it. I have one word for them..."evidence".
I never seen so much smoke downtown that wasn't at a 420 rally
not to mention the epicenter was in front of the CBC building, there were cameras all over that area focused on the crowd, not to mention the other individual camera crews, are station had 3 out (all with security guards) and one point one of the crews lost their remote signal and no one could get a hold of them, pretty scary few minutes

You realize that those aren't disgruntled hockey fans--They are thugs and criminals looking for an excuse to be assholes---
I bet a rather large portion of the offenders are not natural born Canadiens (I have to spell it this way, in order to piss off Leafs fans)
Real hockey fans should have went down and kicked the punks asses--imo
Its a very fine line between "hockey fans" and "thugs looking for trouble". This was about hockey, as much as anything else. Any riot is started and carried out by people looking for trouble, everyday there are opportunities for thugs and criminals to get into trouble (and they do). You have no idea how many chances there were for anarchy during the Olympics last year (lots of non-naturally born Canadians around then). This was a special circumstance entirely, this was the Stanley Cup. People who live here realize more about what happened here than any of you who don't

Although you have lived in Canuckada for a few years and that's cool--
I have spent a fair amount of time around the country as well---In all provinces except BC---
I played hockey all around the country and although the average Canadian hockey fan is intense and serious about the game and his team, they also are true believers in fair play and good sportsmanship--
I have a hard time believing that real hockey fans in any Canadian city or province I have played in, or spent any time in, would riot---Unless the concession stand closed early--
Every rink I ever played in had the most fair minded fans--The sort of fans to give a little cheer for the opposing team, when they make a great play---
I have witnessed this is Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa at NHL games as well--
If true hockey fans in Vancouver have lowered themselves to rioting in the streets after a hockey game, there is no hope for us any longer--
I still stick with my worthless thug angle---
It had nothing to do with hockey. The riot would have happened even if the Canucks won. A few individuals were out to take advantage of the size of the crowd and cause trouble. Unfortunately, it didn't take much for a mob mentality to take over.
The big difference between this and previous riots here and elsewhere is the role that social media played. Almost everyone had a camera or cell phone. Pics and tweets were being uploaded as it all happened. This has provided police with a wealth of evidence. Last time I looked, charges were pending against 117 people with more on the way.
you're generalizing too much and over simplifying, hockey fans and people who cause trouble, aren't mutually exclusive. Not every hockey fan was down there in the streets, not everyone in the streets was looting and burning cop cars. Neither hockey fans nor Canadians are immune from poor judgment.

No matter how you look at it, it is the same as always. The few ruin it for the masses. If I went out shooting up the streets of PA every time I got a hair up my ass, I would live in an empty town.
