    Vintage Marshall Head Help

I have a '72 JMP marshall head but I don't know if it's a bass head or guitar head, it no longer says on the back, the only other info I have is the serial number, 5258D. Anyone know how to tell the difference with the given info? Thx

do you have any more info, or pictures? there are/were alot of variations of the JMP line, and they should all have number codes, usually on the front, for example :2203, 2204, 1986, 1987

these are some pictures of a 1972 JMP, according to the back panel its a Superlead 100 (guitar amp) http://www.gbase.com/gear/marshall-1...-su-1959-1972#
this is info for dating Marshall amps, but doesnt say much about finding out the model http://www.guitarattic.com/how_to_da...rshall_amp.htm

Marshall serial numbers are read, model/serial/year

It looks like the serial number quoted is missing a prefix, this code related to which model it is :-

    A/ or /A 200 Watt
    RI Reissue Series
    S/ or S/A 50 Watt
    SB/ or SB/A Super Bass – 100 Watt
    SL/ or SL/A Super Lead – 100 Watt
    SP/ Super PA
    ST/ or ST/A Tremolo – 100 Watt
    T/ or T/A Tremolo – 50 Watt

Also the serial numbers started in 1969 and the letter after the number relates to the year :-

    A- 1969/1970 N- 1981
    C- 1971 P- 1982
    D- 1972 R- 1983
    E- 1973 S- 1984
    F- 1974 T- 1985
    G- 1975 U- 1986
    H- 1976 V- 1987
    J- 1977 W- 1988
    K- 1978 X- 1989
    L- 1979 Y- 1990
    M- 1980 Z- 1991/1992

Therefore yours would seem to be a 1972

Yes, interesting that it doesn't have an "/" prefix. That would have been the easiest way to tell, although they were often misprinted...

You'd have to open it up and compare circuits with another model.. If it's a Super Lead, it should have a capacitor on the vol. pot of channel I, known as the bright cap... This is basically the only difference between the two.

A lot of people snip them out though, which converts them to Super Bass.

There are a few other minor differences, but I'm no amp tech.

Thanks for all the help, if I get a chance i'll throw some pics up here of it. For whatever reason, any indication of what it is has been removed, other than "JMP" on the front, no prefixes, nothing on the back, you can see where they once were tho, weird.

Well that's part of the problem, it sounds awesome but because it's 100 watts with direct wiring, I need to have the volume up to the point where I could play a stadium to get it to sound the way I want it. At this point it's only good for recording.

Sounds like you would benefit from an attenuator. HotPlate perhaps.
