Maybe I misunderstood the spirit and intent of the thread.
The rhythm guitarist, as I see it, is the second guitar player.
Often overlooked, always under rated.

The first is the lead guitar, if he's the only one there is no rhythm guitar player, eh?

Hetfield, yeah.
He had that squirrely looking Hammet playing leads while he did vocals.

Page? SRV? Blackmore? Iommi?
Calling them rhythm guitarists is like saying they were electric guitarists.
Yeah, it's an element of what they do but they were THE guitar player in their bands.
They were the EVERYTHING guitarists.

Prince was what I would call the show-off guitar I guess.
He always had a guitar player onstage with him, paid to play what Prince told him to.
Prince would do his part to put on a show, and plays very well, but not every song.
